Proverbs 19:9 (NKJV) “Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.”
The proud are those who over estimate themselves. We are not speaking of the pride one might feel in seeing a loved one accomplish a great task or endeavor (but even that can cross lines if a person is taking the credit for their accomplishment or comparing them to others). Here the Proverb is giving notice to those who are full of themselves, convinced that they are more important or superior to others.
It is best to have a spirit of humility, a sense of holding the other person’s interests and feelings above our own. Consideration of others before self is an example of Godly character. We need to be even keeled, humble, and down to earth. Wanting unjust riches with the proud is never better than hanging out with humble loving people.
Romans 12:16 (NKJV) says something similar, “Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.”
