Proverbs 29:23 “A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor.”
As we contemplate humility this month, lets also consider its nemesis, pride. In case you’re wondering, the Bible has nothing good to say about pride. The Devil at one time was a powerful angel, but pride was the root reason he fell.
One definition for pride is haughtiness. Someone who is haughty displays a sense of superiority and self-importance. Pride has a way of making us feel empowered, but according to Proverbs 29:23, this is delusional, it actually brings them down, lower, it makes them weaker.
One way to see “pride,” is take the word and hone in on its middle letter: P-R-I-D-E. Anytime anyone thinks first of “I,” or that “I” can, or have done anything apart from God, they’ve entered the lowest of places.
Humility on the flipside starts low but ends high. By God’s grace, those with humble spirits recognize one thing, God is god and we are not. We are nothing apart from Him. Humility comes when we internalize the truth that nothing in the life of a Christian is to be about us. It’s all about God and for His glory!
