Titus 3:2b, “Instead, they should be gentle and show true humility to everyone“
The book of Titus is incredibly important, as it provides us with a framework for how to live as believers in the world. Just like today, believers back then lived within a secular system. In the beginning of chapter 3, Paul instructs Titus to teach believers to submit to the government and its officers. While this may seem easy enough, the question arises, what happens when the government mandates actions that go against our Christian principles? Peter and John answered this question with a bit of sanctified sarcasm in Acts 4:19, asking, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?”
On the issue of pride, we must hold fast to the Biblical convictions given to us through the Word of God. We believe that God has given each human the gift of free will, and our hearts go out to those who struggle with this issue. In love, we point them to trust in Jesus, believing that in doing so, a person will stop calling the shots and give God the reins. C.S. Lewis said, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”
Christians, we must take away one important lesson from this verse: treat everyone with gentleness and, above all, show true humility. While we may disagree with others, we must obey God and not man…doing so in the spirit of gentleness and humility.”
